UNA and the Alabama Planning Institute is offering a workshop entitled "Hazard Mitigation for Planners and Local Government Officials" on Thursday, March 15, 2012, at Tallassee City Hall, Tallassee, Alabama. The 6-hour course is approved for 6.0 AICP CM credits and also qualifies for Certified Alabama Planning and Zoning Official (CAPZO) recertification. The cost is $159 which includes lunch, refreshment, and a certificate of attendance. Register online at

Workshop Objectives
This interactive workshop will cover the basics of updating a hazard mitigation plan, how a community can obtain funding for mitigation projects, and how mitigation planning objectives can be incorporated into the local planning and regulatory processes. Participants will enjoy presentations by leading professionals in the field, take part in group exercises, and contribute via group discussions. The workshop will provide attendees with a thorough understanding of hazard mitigation planning, project development, and successful methods for implementation.
Who should attend?
The workshop is geared towards planners, public works administrators, city/county engineers, emergency managers, floodplain management staff, building inspectors, zoning administrators, and elected officials responsible for carrying out tasks and making decisions related to hazard mitigation. Hazard mitigation is a new topic to be presented and is of particular interest to Alabama communities devastated by tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, droughts, and wildfires, among other natural disasters in recent years.
